There are specific requirements that must be met by applicants to qualify for a visitor visa. The consular officer at the embassy or consulate will determine whether you qualify for the visa. Foreign travelers who are citizens from certain eligible countries may also be able to visit without a visa.

The presumption in the law is that every visitor visa applicant is an intending immigrant. Therefore, applicants for visitor visas must overcome this presumption by demonstrating that:

• The purpose of their trip is to enter for business, pleasure, or medical treatment;
• That they plan to remain for a specific, limited period;
• Evidence of funds to cover expenses; That they plan to remain for a specific, limited period;
• Evidence of compelling social and economic ties abroad;

That they have a residence outside the U.S. as well as other binding ties that will insure their return abroad at the end of the visit.

• Passport: Which is valid for travel and must be valid for at least 6months beyond your period of stay (unless exempt by country specific agreements). Each individual who needs a visa must submit a separate application, including any family member listed in your passport.
• Application fee payment receipt– if you are required to pay before your interview.
• Photo– You will upload your photo while completing the online application form. If the photo upload fails, you must bring one printed photo in the format explained in the photograph Requirements.

Additional Documents Which May Be Required

Review the instructions for how to apply for a visa on the website of the Embassy or Consulate where you will apply. Additional documents may be requested to establish if you are qualified. For example, additional requested documents may include evidence of;

• The purpose of your trip,
• Your intent to depart after your trip, and /or
• Your ability to pay all costs of the trip.

Evident of your employment and/ or your family ties may be sufficient to show the purpose of your trip and your intent to return to your home country. If you cannot cover all the cost of your trip, you may show evidence that another person will cover some or all costs for your trip.

Note: Visa applicants must qualify on the basis of the applicant’s residence and ties abroad, rather than assurances from the family and friends. A letter of invitation or Affidavit of support is not needed to apply for a visitor visa. If you choose to bring a letter of invitation or Affidavit of support to your interview, please remember it is not one of the factors used in determining whether to issue or deny the visa.

A consular officer will interview you to determine whether you are qualified to receive a visitor visa.  You must establish that you meet the requirements to receive a visitor visa.

Ink-free, digital fingerprint scans are taken as part of the application process. They are usually taken during your interview, but this varies based on location.

 After your visa interview, the consular officer may determine that your application requires further administrative processing. The consular officer will inform you if this is required

Once a visa stamp is obtained, you would need to present yourself to an immigration inspector at the port of entry such as the airport. The officer at the airport will interview you and determine the length of time to allow you. The length of stay is indicated on your arrival/departure record. Individuals are advised to carefully note the expiration date

A business visitor will be granted a period of entry sufficient to conduct his or her business. Generally, these visits are approved for less than three months depending on the country the individual is travelling to.

A non-business visitor will also be automatically be granted a six-month period of entry. Only in unusual circumstances will the visa holder be granted a period of entry that is shorter or longer than six months.
